Step 1: Download and install the Java Development Kit (JDK) from Oracle.

Step 2: Download and install the latest Android Software Development Kit.

Step 3: At the end of the Android SDK installation, choose to start the SDK Manager.

Step 4: By default, the “Android 4.0.3 (API15)” package is checked for installation. Make sure to select the “Android 2.3.3 (API10)” package as well and that the “Google USB Driver package” is also checked under “Extras.” If you’re not going to be using the Android SDK with Ice Cream Sandwich, you can elect not to install Android 4.0.3 (API15).

Install USB Driver

Step 1: Go to Start, then type “cmd” in the search box. Instead of hitting the Enter key, hit, Ctrl+Shift+Enter. This will launch the command prompt with administrative privileges.

Step 2: To add the Kindle Fire to the USB driver file, type:

notepad c:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver\android_winusb.inf

Hint: copy the text above and right-click on the command prompt window and select “paste.”

Step 3: At the beginning of the [Google.NTx86] and [Google.NTamd64] sections, add the following lines:

Save the file.

Step 4: In Notepad, open C:\Users\username\.android\adb_usb.ini, where username is your Windows user name. On a new line, add the following text:

Save the file and exit Notepad.

Step 5: Plug the Kindle Fire into a USB port on your computer and allow Windows to install drivers. All the drivers but one, should install correctly.

Step 6: Open up Device Manager and you’ll see the Kindle listed under Other devices with an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle. Right-click on it and select Update Driver Software.

Step 7: Choose “Browse my computer for driver software” and browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver then click “Next.”

Step 8: At the Windows Security warning prompt, select “Install this driver software anyway.” Once finished, you’ll get a confirmation screen that shows that the device driver for the “Android Composite ADB Interface” was installed.

Take screenshots

Step 1: On your computer, click Start, then in the search box, type C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\tools\ddms.bat and hit Enter. You can also navigate to it using Windows Explorer and double-click on ddms.bat.

Step 2: When your Kindle Fire appears in the top, left-hand box, click on it to highlight it. If it doesn’t appear right away, try resetting adb by going to Actions, then selecting “Reset adb.”

Step 3: Hit Ctrl+S to take a screen capture.

Step 4: The Device Screen Capture window will pop up with your screen capture, allowing you to refresh, rotate, save, or copy it.

That’s it. The next time you want to take a screenshot, just launch ddms.bat again. You might also want to create a shortcut for ddms.bat on your desktop or taskbar, so you don’t have to go looking for it every time.

The Nook app is available for Android (which is the Fire’s OS), but Amazon chose to exclude its competitor’s e-reader app from its store.

We don’t blame it, but those who are making the switch from Nook to Kindle (or use both) would benefit from access to their old purchases.

After all, it’s not like you can sell your old Nook purchases to a used bookstore, right?

Follow the steps to reclaim your Barnes & Noble Nook books and access them on your new device:

Step 1: Go to the Kindle Fire’s settings (upper-right) and tap “More,” then “Device.” Turn “Allow Installation of Applications” to “on.” You’ll get a warning–just tap “OK.”

Step 2: Launch your Fire’s browser and head to m.getjar.com. GetJar is one of the best places to get third-party Android apps. At the top of the page, search for “Nook.” When you find it, tap Download. You’ll be asked to download the GetJar app. Tap “Download GetJar.”

Step 3: When the download completes, tap the file in the downloads list (which you can access from your Kindle’s top bar), and select “Install.”

Step 4: Once GetJar installs, find it in your Fire’s app library, open it, and search for “Nook” again. Tap “Download,” review the app’s permissions, and tap “Install.” The Nook app will show up in your Kindle Fire’s library.

Head back to the GetJar app anytime you want to download other third-party apps like Google Maps, Dropbox, Facebook, or a different browser like Dolphin HD. None of these apps is available in Amazon’s Appstore, but you can download them from GetJar.

With only 6.5GB of available storage and no option for expansion, it’s unrealistic to transfer your entire media library to your new device. That means constantly adding and removing files to and from your Fire as necessary.

Unless of course, you use an app like Splashtop.

Even if you’re halfway across the world, the $3 Splashtop app will let you stream music, movies, and TV shows from your computer to your Kindle Fire. That means you can access any file you own (as long as you’re on Wi-Fi) without worrying about storage space.

The benefit of having your e-books listed under “Books” is that you can sort them by author. Under “Docs,” you can only sort by recent or title. If your collection is a modest one, this might not bother you a whole lot. If, however, your collection is rather sizable, you might want the extra sorting option. Here’s how to get side loaded e-books to show up under “Books” on the Kindle Fire:

Step 1: Download and install the Calibre e-book manager.

Step 2: Add your e-book(s) to Calibre.

Step 3: Highlight the e-book or e-books that you want to transfer to your Kindle Fire and click the “Convert books” button.

Step 4: When the convert window appears, make sure that the output format is set to “MOBI.”

Step 5: Click on “MOBI Output” from the left column and delete the [PDOC] tag in the “Personal Doc tag” section.

Step 6: Click the OK button to start converting your e-books.

Step 7: Once Calibre has finished converting your e-books, copy your e-book files to the “Books” folder on your Kindle Fire. Remember, you’ll need a micro-USB data cable (not included with the Kindle Fire) to transfer files to your Kindle Fire.

Step 8: Check the “Books” section to make sure your e-books are there.

That’s it. To delete the PDOC tag permanently in Calibre, go to Preferences > Output Options > MOBI Output and remove the tag there.

A side benefit to converting your e-books in Calibre, is that it shrinks the size of the Mobipocket file (.mobi). Since the Kindle Fire doesn’t have any memory expansion slots, converting your e-books may end up saving you a lot of storage space on your Fire.

As a new Kindle Fire owner, you’ll have to learn all the basics, from surfing the Web to copying and pasting. Of course, you’ll learn as you navigate your new device, but to make things easier, get to know these four tips and tricks first:

1. Secure your Fire. Before you do anything, consider securing your device with a password. This way, if it’s ever lost or stolen, your personal data will be safe. To set a password go to Settings > More > Security, and turn “Lock screen password” on.

2. Organize the home screen. Because the home screen carousel is so messy and doesn’t have customization options (we’re hoping for some in the next update), utilize the shelves below. To add an icon to the shelf, long press an item in the carousel and select “Add to favorites.”

To remove an item from the shelf, long-press it and select “Remove from favorites.” If you want to rearrange the icons in your Favorites shelves, long-press and drag to the desired spot.

3. Customize your bookmarks. When you launch the browser, you’ll see a tiled list of bookmarks that Amazon has preselected for you. To remove a bookmark, long-press it and select “Delete.” To add a bookmark, go to the Web site you want to add, tap the Bookmarks icon (at the bottom), and then tap the box with the “+” in the upper-left.

4. Copy and paste. This function is a bit confusing on the Fire. To copy text, tap and hold a word, then drag the markers to highlight the text you want to copy. Then, tap the highlighted text to add it to the clipboard. To paste, long-press a text field and select “Paste.”
